Museum of Teeth Culture

This project was created for the Remaking the Museum class. For this project, we were assigned to create a virtual exhibit that visitors can engage with independently.

My group decided to create a virtual museum about myths and culture revolving around teeth, and to collect many stories about teeth throughout the world.

OUR CONCEPT

The inspiration behind this virtual museum stemmed from the realization that there were many different superstitions, myths, legends, and sayings about teeth depending on where you are from. This led my group to create a light-weighted virtual exhibition specifically about teeth, accompanied by playful interactions and engaging experiences

Our goal was for audiences to leave with at least one interesting fact or aspect about teeth culture while also resonating with the stories.

OUR APPROACH

Since the topic of teeth is so broad, we focused on only including traditions, myths, sayings, and superstitions revolving around teeth.
We chose a light-weighted approach of keeping the museum web-based so that it’s easier for audience of all ages to experience.

There are a lot of playful interactions embedded throughout the MoTC:

  1. Interactive illustration located on the Teeth Myths and Sayings page

  2. Game about wisdom teeth

  3. Mascot to establish a brand image and help navigate users throughout the site

  4. Short film for branding

The short film created by my amazing teammate Binna Lee advertises the MoTC and sets the tone of our fun and quirky museum. The film is set to the Christmas song “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth”. We believe branding is important when it comes to audience engagement, which is why we made an effort to create a social presence.

MY ROLE

In order to create a narrative within each section of the museum, my group decided to split the museum into the following three sections and assign each section to an individual group member:

  1. Baby Tooth Traditions

  2. Teeth Culture- Myths and Sayings

  3. Teeth Games

I was in charge of the Teeth Culture section, where I created an interactive map with a collection of tooth myths and sayings from around the world.

NARRATIVE

Storytelling and narrative were very important in our museum design. The overall experience at MoTC is about learning interesting aspects of human desires, anticipations, and expectations projected onto the teeth.

The stories we’ve collected are aimed at provoking a nostalgic feeling among the audiences, allowing them to reminisce about their own stories from their culture they grew up with, and create a space to share their stories with others.

AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT

By sharing stories from across the world, we invite the audience to reflect on the stories about teeth they grew up with and start a fun and quirky conversation about the teeth culture.
